Sumo wrestling is a Japanese form of heavyweight wrestling, in which a wrestler wins a bout by forcing his opponent outside a marked circle or to the ground. In sumo, size matters and I’m not talking about muscle. Over centuries they’ve developed tricks to get as big (and fat) as possible. Unfortunately many of are using some of these techniques and we don’t even know it.
Here are 5 habits to avoid if you don’t want to look like a sumo wrestler:
1. Eating only 1 or 2 meals per day.
Sumo wrestlers wake up early, but don’t eat until late in the day. This ensures that they will be ravenous and will consume everything they see in massive amounts. This guarantees an abundant calorie surplus and extreme weight gain. When you eat a huge meal in one sitting, everything that your body can’t use right away is stored directly as fat. 2. Don’t eat breakfast.
Sumo wrestlers always skip breakfast. This is a perfect way to slow down your metabolism so you burn fewer calories throughout the day. It will also cause you to overeat and make bad food choices later in the day. Here are some healthy breakfast recipes.
3. Exercise on an empty stomach.
When you’re working out without properly fueling your body, your metabolism will conserve as much energy as possible to get you through the routine. So you end up burning much fewer calories than you would have had you eaten prior to exercising.
4. Eat out.
Countless studies have concluded that people eating in a restaurant will eat 40% more food than they would if they were at home. Sumo wrestlers benefit from distracting each other while eating out to make sure they don’t notice the signals of feeling full or satisfied. Many restaurants also serve portion sizes 2-4x larger than what we’d serve ourselves at home.
5. Sleep after eating a huge meal.
When sumo wrestlers finish their large meals, they like to take a long nap. Falling asleep with a full stomach forces the body to store most of the calories as fat because it doesn’t have the ability to metabolize large amounts of food while sleeping.
